Veterans Conservation Corps : The Veterans Conservation Corps, held their first historical restoration class at Fort Worden and at other Port Townsend locations in April of 2009.
The mission of the Veterans Conservation Corps is to assist veterans by providing training and volunteer opportunities that help to restore and protect Washington state’s natural resources...and in this case, some fantastic old buildings in Port Townsend.

My thanks to the VCC, the participants, Ed Bowen, Mark Fischer, Fort Worden and Kevin Palo.

Training Drill, "Burn to Learn." : Burn to learn, a controlled burn in Port Townsend, Washington with the East Jefferson Fire and Rescue. A donated structure was used for several training evolutions, before allowing the house to burn to the ground. Firefighters were able to train in search and rescue, trapped firefighters, thermal imager training, attic operations, medical and law enforcement interactions.

Walking for Peace : Chauncey Tudhope-Locklear 'walking till he drops' for peace. He started his walk in Port Townsend Washington at 8:00 am and had been walking approximately eleven hours when these photos were taken. Chauncey just wants to inspire people, inspire them to do something for peace. He plans on literally walking until he drops, no breaks, non-stop and with no food. Chauncey is 19 years old and is walking till he drops....

2009 Polar Bear Dip at Nordland : The 14th annual Polar Bear Dip took place as usual, across from the Nordland Store
on Marrowstone Island. Participants ranged from cold to really cold.

Canoe Journey 2008 : Canoe Journey 2008, saw 17 Canoes land in Port Townsend this year.
Travelers were welcomed ashore and spent the night in Port Townsend.
The long journey to Cowichan, British Columbia, continued the next day.

Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma : The Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raided the Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc. in Portland Oregon last week. Approximately 167 people were detained. Of those 167 workers, 131 were bused to the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, Washington.
In researching a bit for this little essay, I found some things about Fresh Del Monte that surprised me. Perhaps it will surprise you as well...

Seattle May Day/Immigration March : On Tuesday May 1, thousands of activists, immigrants and supporters marched from Seattle Centers Fisher Pavilion to Westlake Park and back for a rally after the march. The protesters want immigration reform and an end to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.
